Whakamāhuki | Overview

Grow confident, culturally grounded reo Māori capability—at work, during work hours.

Te Reo Mataora Level 1 brings te reo Māori to life as a source of identity, connection, vitality and wellbeing. Learners develop foundational language skills alongside an understanding of tikanga, Māori values, history, identity and relational practice. The course moves progressively from pronunciation and introductions into pepeha, workplace language, Māori values, maramataka, pōwhiri and whakatau. Every kaupapa is connected to real communication with colleagues, whānau, communities and stakeholders.

What this course covers

Whāinga Paetae | Course Objectives

Across the programme, participants will:

  • Build strong pronunciation foundations, including vowels, consonants, digraphs, macrons, syllables, stress and rhythm.

  • Use greetings, farewells, acknowledgements, introductions and common workplace expressions with growing confidence.

  • Construct simple noun, descriptive, locative and instructional language patterns for practical everyday communication.

  • Develop and deliver a short mihi and an authentic pepeha that reflect identity, relationships and place.

  • Learn a simple karakia and understand its meaning, purpose and appropriate use within professional contexts.

  • Explore key events in the history, suppression and revitalisation of te reo M?ori and their relationship to identity and wellbeing.

  • Understand and apply values such as manaakitanga, whanaungatanga, mana, rangatiratanga, kaitiakitanga, tika and pono.

  • Build confidence participating appropriately in hui, p?whiri, whakatau and other tikanga-based processes.

  • Explore maramataka, p?r?kau, taiao and M?ori understandings of time, wellbeing and collective responsibility.

  • Create a practical plan for bringing te reo M?ori into meetings, emails, relationships and everyday workplace practice.

By the end of the course, participants should be able to:

  • Apply foundational pronunciation conventions consistently.

  • Introduce themselves and deliver a short mihi and pepeha.

  • Use greetings, acknowledgements, farewells and common workplace expressions.

  • Construct basic noun, descriptive and active sentence patterns.

  • Explain the relationship between language, identity, mana and wellbeing.

  • Participate more confidently in karakia, waiata, p?whiri and whakatau contexts.

  • Apply selected M?ori values to professional relationships and practice.

  • Create a realistic personal reo M?ori continuation plan.

Course Dates

Courses commence during the week of Monday 24 August 2026. The indicative final teaching week is the week of 26 October 2026.

Class Option 1:

  • Tuesday: 3.30pm - 5.00pm

CLass Option 2

  • Wednesday: 5.30pm - 7.00pm

Participants enrol in one stream. Where space permits, learners may attend the alternative stream when they cannot attend their usual class.

Strengthen your confidence, deepen your understanding and bring the learning into the places where it matters. Places are limited so that every participant has meaningful opportunities to practise, ask questions and receive support from the kaiako.
